MSFX Flight 11/24/14: Sokcho to Mt. Paekdu

Post by Lurch » Tue Nov 25, 2014 7:02 pm

This was a very scenic flight, as we wanted to see the large extinct volcano, near Samjiyon-Up, North Korea. The 16th Tigers have flown virtual Deep Strikes in that same area while flying Falcon-4. It was a surprise that for all of North Korea, MSFX only lists one airport, Pyongyang. We took off from Sokcho, S.K. and navigated by dead reckoning, using a heading derived from the Falcon-4 Map. We flew a Navy version of the T-45. What a ship! We reached the volcano, Mt. Paekdu, on the Chinese/N. Korean border. We took some pictures and flew east across the mountains to Chongjin. However, there was no airport. GPS showed an airport to the north at Yanji, China. We landed there. The mountains were unbelievable.
