Debrief 01/29/16 Mojo's Campaign OCA in the Northeast

Post by Android » Sat Jan 30, 2016 12:58 pm

This was a full moon, pre-dawn OCA strike on KyongSong's Chuul Airstrip Deep in Indian territory just south of Chong-jin. A successful 741mi. RT ride high in the sky on the cruise in, down to NOE on the way to the IP, the Strike and the Egress. Air traffic was non existent on the way in. The loadouts were heavy and the air was thin at the Con-layer. We couldn't successfully get above the con-layer and in the backs of our minds was a single thought running over and over; "The Enemy Never Sleeps". At those high-altitude-forced slow speeds, we were sitting ducks and went unnoticed until we were prematurely urged down with the Mud Spikes by SA-10's, SA-5's and SA-2's. We skimmed the water and earth as we went feet dry cutting the corners off our way points to improve our fuel consumption and keep our distance from the SAM's. We knew that NOE wasn't enough against the SA-10's, but unknown to us prior to the sun rising, we had some small mountains on the coast that provided some convenient terrain masking. Sure, as with any TFR flight, we were continuously subjected to small arms fire from guerrillas, and other village soldiers rubbing the sleep out of their eyes while trying to operate their AAA placements here and there. But the challenge of hitting something moving at 600 ft per second with any kind of unguided munition is a daunting task with or without the rising sun in your eyes. Unfortunately for the enemy is an axiom every pilot knows, "Fortune Favors the Bold". We didn't win the war but we made it home whole with enough gas in one jet to flame out on the apron. Convenient there again for us, for the enemy; not so much. We had Escort and SEAD follow our ingress to a point and then they called off leaving us on our own. It worked out. On our way back, however, we were greeted by a pair of Mig-29's. By this time we knew the odds were in our favor. It wasn't just the Altitude and SA that made us feel superior, it was that feeling that every warrior has when a surprise attack is awarded with complete success, the group mentality of teamwork and the shared sense of raised self awareness that lends only one outcome: Victory! And to the Victors.......
